Using spatial analytics to identify floodplain forests and evaluate their ecological condition in eastern New York

“It has been estimated that approximately 90% of floodplain forests have been lost across “North America and Europe. Much of what remains is degraded due to changes to local flood dynamics, disturbance pressure from adjacent land use, and exotic species invasion. In spite of their functional value and recognition as an imperiled community type in New York the location and distribution of floodplain forests is relatively unknown. This data gap impedes our ability to address the threats they face and to find areas for conservation or restoration action. My thesis research integrates field and remote data to address these data gaps.”
